Kula no na Po'e Hawaii o Papakolea is a community-based non-profit with a staff of 22 serving the residents of Papakolea, Kewalo, Kalawahine Hawaiian Homesteads, and the community at large from the Papakolea Community Center and Park located at 2150 Tantalus Drive, Honolulu, Hawaii since 1992. Kula provides community based education, health and work force development services through various programs and partnerships in the interest of lowering health disparities in Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Island populations of Hawaii.
The work of Kula includes work development programs such as the Papakolea Fire Academy providing training for testing for the various fire departments at the Federal, State, and City levels and our Community Health Worker Certification and Apprentice program. Health program that include Hula for Hypertension, and a Dementia Friendly Community building upon the upon the work of our service learning program with local universities providing hone health visits to our home bound kupuna.
Our education offerings include our Lamaku and Junior Leader Programs designed for youth from grades K-12 receiving homework assistance and tutoring. Kula with its partners schools with Theodore Roosevelt High School, R.L. Stevenson Middle School, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, and Pauoa Elementary School addresses on going academic achievement behavior, and attendance of homestead youth. Care of our kupuna and support of our Caregivers through funding received from the Administration for Native Americans is a focus to ensure there is a mechanism and support to "safely age in place" through the Kupuna Community Care Network. We are taking care of our community caregivers so they are able to take care of their love ones.
